It's Monday, August thirty-first. You know the sound of a barcode being scanned. It happens six billion times every day, according to GS1, the organization that manages the global system. But the guy who invented it drew the first version in the sand on a beach in Florida in 1948, and he was thinking about Morse code, not groceries. And the first product ever scanned wasn't a loaf of bread or a carton of milk. It was a ten-pack of Wrigley's Juicy Fruit chewing gum, scanned at eight oh one in the morning on June twenty-sixth, 1974, in Troy, Ohio. It rang up for sixty-seven cents. That pack of gum is now in the Smithsonian. The story starts in 1948 at the Drexel Institute of Technology in Philadelphia. A supermarket executive came to visit the dean of engineering. He had a problem. Supermarkets were getting bigger, carrying more products, and checkout lines were getting slower. Every item had to be priced manually by a clerk, and every price had to be keyed into a cash register by hand. It was slow, prone to error, and there was no way to track inventory in real time. The executive asked the dean: could the institute figure out a way to automatically capture product information at checkout?

The dean said no. It wasn't a research problem the school wanted to take on. But a graduate student named Bernard Silver overheard the conversation, and he couldn't stop thinking about it. He told his friend Norman Joseph Woodland, who had just graduated from Drexel with a mechanical engineering degree and was working there as a lecturer.

Woodland had an unusual background for this problem. During World War II, he'd worked as a technical assistant on the Manhattan Project in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. He was trained to think about systems, about encoding and decoding information. After Silver told him about the supermarket problem, Woodland became obsessed. He quit his teaching job, took some money he'd made in the stock market, and moved into his grandfather's apartment in Florida to work on it full time. Woodland knew the solution needed to encode product information in a way a machine could read optically. He kept thinking about Morse code, which he'd learned as a Boy Scout. Morse code encodes every letter as a series of dots and dashes, simple patterns that can be sent and received with almost no technology.

One day, Woodland was sitting on a beach in Miami, still turning the problem over in his head. He drew dots and dashes in the sand, the way you doodle when you're thinking. Then he pulled his fingers down through the dots, stretching them into thin vertical lines. He did the same with the dashes, creating thick lines. He looked at what he'd drawn and realized he'd just invented the barcode.

Woodland called Silver, and they got to work. They filed for a patent on October twentieth, 1949. The patent, number 2,612,994, was granted on October seventh, 1952. It covered both the linear barcode we know today and a circular bullseye pattern, which they thought might be easier to scan from any angle.

There was just one problem: the technology to make it work didn't exist yet. Lasers were still experimental. Computers were the size of rooms. Woodland took a job at IBM in 1951, hoping they'd develop the technology, but IBM concluded it wasn't commercially viable. So Woodland and Silver sold their patent in 1952 to a company called Philco for fifteen thousand dollars. Philco sold it to RCA later that same year. And then, for seventeen years, almost nothing happened. The patent expired in 1969. That same year, RCA managed to interest the National Association of Food Chains in the idea, and the industry formed a committee to create a uniform grocery product code. Suddenly, it was a competition. IBM realized that the guy who invented the barcode worked for them. They transferred Woodland to their North Carolina research facility and put a team on the problem.

The team leader was George Laurer, a senior engineer at IBM. Laurer's life story is worth a pause. He contracted polio as a teenager. While in eleventh grade, he was drafted into the Army during World War II. After the war, a teacher at a technical school told him he was too smart for repair work and should go to college. He got his engineering degree from the University of Maryland in 1951 and joined IBM that same year.

When IBM assigned Laurer to the barcode project, the initial design was Woodland's circular bullseye pattern. RCA was pushing the same shape. But Laurer discovered that the bullseye had a fatal flaw: when the ink smeared during printing, which happens all the time in the real world, the pattern became unreadable. The circles bled into each other. Laurer proposed a radical alternative: vertical stripes. Straight bars of varying widths. The smear problem disappeared because uniform ink spread doesn't change the relative width of vertical bars.

IBM submitted Laurer's design to the Symbol Selection Committee in 1973. Competing against proposals from RCA, Singer, Pitney Bowes, and others, the IBM design won. The Universal Product Code, the UPC, was born. Woodland had drawn the first barcode in the sand, and Laurer had made it work in the real world. On June twenty-sixth, 1974, the first barcode was scanned at a Marsh supermarket in Troy, Ohio. It was eight oh one in the morning. A cashier named Sharon Buchanan picked up a ten-pack of Wrigley's Juicy Fruit gum and pulled it across an NCR scanner. The register displayed sixty-seven cents. There were other barcoded items in the shopping cart, but the gum happened to be the one she grabbed first.

The choice of Juicy Fruit was deliberate. Wrigley had been one of the earliest companies to put UPC codes on its products, and they wanted the first scan to be their gum. They printed a special commemorative wrapper for the occasion.

There's an odd footnote to the UPC story that shows how new technologies get absorbed into old fears. Laurer noticed that the guard bars, the vertical lines at the beginning, middle, and end of every barcode that tell the scanner where to start and stop, look identical to the pattern for the digit six. So the guard bars are essentially six, six, six. When UPC codes started appearing on products in stores, some religious groups protested, claiming the barcode was the mark of the beast from the Book of Revelation. Laurer addressed this directly on his personal website, writing: "There is nothing sinister about this nor does it have anything to do with the Bible's mark of the beast. It is simply a coincidence like the fact that my first, middle, and last name all have six letters." George Joseph Laurer. Six letters, six letters, six letters. A supermarket executive asked a question. A grad student overheard it. His friend quit his job and drew lines in the sand. An engineer who'd survived polio turned those lines into a system that scans six billion times a day. The barcode is so deeply embedded in modern life that you probably didn't think about it once today, even though you almost certainly saw at least a dozen of them.
